Re: Shooting in a school in Scotland
I think it needs to be said that for one reason or another, many legal and responsible shooters choose to use airguns...some also own s1 and s2 weapons...some don't.
I don't own or shoot airguns but I feel some responsibility for sticking up for the legal and safe airgunner. Just like the SLR and handgun ban there is no evidence that it has prevented any crime. And I don't think it is logical to quote stats on airguns from God knows where when in the same breath it is admitted that such stats are mixed in with other firearm crimes.
:)

Did you check out the link? The figures are from the home office and are taken from the Police Crime reporting systems. And I don't think it is logical to quote stats on airguns from God knows where when in the same breath it is admitted that such stats are mixed in with other firearm crimes.
The fact that these figures are mixed in with other firearm figures is exactly why every shooter needs to be aware of what is happening with them, as it directly affects us all.

Ban air guns in Scotland = all legal, law abiding and safe shooters loose their sport, scum continue as normal using airguns for crime...nobody knows who has them.
License them all = nobody knows who has them...law abiding gets restricted and penalised (fee), some put a few on ticket and leave a few off ticket...result, no change...scum continue as normal using airguns for crime.
Is any of this making sense?

Re: Shooting in a school in Scotland
It has worked before in this country, sadly more than once, and it can work again.
So what if the scum bags do not register them or hand them in? Gives me a nice reason to nick them when I see them, and then they will not be able to get to have a FAC or SC any time soon.
Licensing does work, what no one has mentioned is that for many of us air guns were the way we came into the sport. Taking easy access away from younger people could have a detrimental effect on the numbers in the sport in years to come and that would have to be addressed.
Actually, due to the public image of shooting I suspect that the time has already arrived where by we need to be positively recruiting younger people into the sport, but that is another topic altogether.

DM...but you can already nick them now...under current law.
The deterent will be the risk of getting nicked (there has to be a copper to sapre to send out quickly...there will not be with the cuts), and the sentence...bet you it would actually be no different to that under current law.
BTW ... I take it you know I am pro Police and have a few in family and one or two in MFI.

BANS: get REAL. How about banging the culprits up for 5years CONSECUTIVELY for each pereson shot! or even better, the ARU just slotting them, the ads about THAT possibility are all over the place up here.!
No amount of handwringing, bans, mothers against common sense, etc will stop stupid people doing stupid stuff with guns (or cars, golf clubs, cricket bats, phone cords, etc) EVER!
Cheap guns sold in toy shops?? Fine, stop that NOW if it has not already been done. Remember that the gutter press and politics CLOSED many airgun clubs in Scotland after Dunblane..and made clubs hide away like lepers instead of proclaiming their existence and being a place where kids wityh airguins could go to shoot safely and LEARN! Too many people took it upon themselves to share the blame for Dunblane too - which seriously screwed the cause for guns in the UK..
I wonder what kind of gun was used, would be funny if it was a wee BB gun cfrom the Poundshop.
So, how about we ban CRIMINALS instead, apply existing laws FULLY, sod all this social worker excuse crud..
Banning objects will NEVER solve a problem, it only criminalises the law abiding. NO BANS- EVER!

   Jeezuz, what a joke. The council is working closely with the school to ensure that the school, the
children and their families are appropriately supported."

BINGO! These two cretins, and those that supplied them with the air rifle, need to be made an example of under the new airgun laws that were brought in last year. 5 years a piece MINIMUM

Agreed, send out a signal to these and any other wannabe air gun assassins.Blackstuff wrote:BINGO! These two cretins, and those that supplied them with the air rifle, need to be made an example of under the new airgun laws that were brought in last year. 5 years a piece MINIMUM
Actually, no it makes no sense to me what so ever, who mentioned banning them? :Licence new and used commercial sales to start with, nothing sinister, just make a start. This is probably how Fireams licensing in the UK started.Robin128 wrote:Ban air guns in Scotland = all legal, law abiding and safe shooters loose their sport, scum continue as normal using airguns for crime...nobody knows who has them.

Two things:
One, I feel very strongly about air weapons as they can and do kill innocent people either by error or malice. Two, I am an FAC holder as you are and the majority of the F-B(UK) members and I sure as hell do not want my FAC jeopardised by a feral minority because the press is incapable of differentiating between an air gun and a full-bore rifle.
You can bang on as much as you want about how unjust licensing air guns is, but wait until you son or daughter or grand child or close relative or pet or your CLOSEST FRIEND is killed or blinded or left in permemantly disabled state with brain damage because some scrote shot him in the head with an air gun.
Then you can tell me how YOU feel.....

I can go along with that.John25 wrote:Amnesty, register, prosecute, confiscate, ban.
