What's this worth chaps? Sako Varminter in .243 <200 rounds
What's this worth chaps? Sako Varminter in .243 fewer than 200 rounds, standard wooden stock comes with Reflex T8, mounts and Schmidt & Bender (details tbc) all bought new 4 years ago. I'm asking on behalf of a friend who is thinking of selling due to lack of use. Clearly details of the scope are an unknown at the moment.
I'm a bit out of touch with prices now so this is a genuine enquiry and not a closet for sale listing. The lack of use must be a strong plus point. PM me if you like with your idea of a realistic price, thank you.

I'm only trying to help this guy with some no-commitment advice on what his rifle might be worth. I know that S&B scopes can very hugely in price, I'm guessing it to be fixed power or low power zoom, it certainly won't be top end spec and it could well be Hungarian.

I have no view on such rifle prices, have you looked at GT to see what they are going for?

It has to be the thick end of 1500 quid.
Guns are expensive to buy and cheap to sell. Even more so these days. There are a few that do hold their value because of current vogue, but honestly, I don't think top end rifles are recouping anywhere near what was originally spent.
My local place is somewhat devoid of second hand bargains at the minute. Firstly because of what they are being offered part ex for their guns and secondly, people aren't wanting to splash out!

In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

A lot is going to depend on what it actually is - Sako do not have a model called the Varminter - they do a 75 Varmint and an 85 varmint. Both in 243. I am not being pedantic here, just pointing it out - as there is a large difference in value between the two.
Unlike Sim's estimate - I would say around the £1k-£1.2k max - quite a few 85's (Which is the newer one) change hands for less than 1k with scope/mod.

Thank you chap. I've advised him to tot up what it cost him and start there and it rather depends whether he has to let it go (which he doesn't) or would just like to rehome it through lack of use.

Tot it all up and work on about 65% of that ?
And for my money I prefer the 75 (just feels nicer)

4 years old and no provable history - between £700 and £1000 - less to the trade - say £500 depending on the scope.Sim G wrote:It has to be the thick end of 1500 quid.

Not sure what you're looking for - obviously the owner can confirm its history from purchase to date and reckons he could provide an actual round count - - or are you suggesting that with a s/h rifle you're only ever taking someone's word for it?dodgyrog wrote:4 years old and no provable history - between £700 and £1000 - less to the trade - say £500 depending on the scope.Sim G wrote:It has to be the thick end of 1500 quid.
