Wifi security camera/shot spotting questions?

#1 Post by 1066 »

A bit of brain picking please - I've been asked to look into fitting some sort of camera system on my local indoor 25m range.

Because we shoot at 20 yds and 25m we want to avoid fixed monitors with trailing leads etc. - We are out in the sticks so no internet or phone connection available.

Is there some sort of camera/baby monitor system where we could have a wireless camera tethered/hotspot/bluetooth linked to a simple tablet or even your phone?

I've made wired systems:

Camera through spotting scopes:

and wireless cameras using RC drone type video transmitters:

I'm really looking for some sort of "off the peg" system that won't cost an arm and a leg - I'm fairly dim about this sort of technology - any ideas?

How about a local wifi hotspot running something like MotionEye? Connect a Pi Zero cam wirelessly or a webcam directly to the hotspot. Then users can connect up to the IP address using their phones. I don't think you need internet connection to create a local network.

I used a wireless webcam app and 2 phones to do this, the phone you use as the camera broadcasts its video over a wifi network, and you use the viewing phone to log on to the website and view the feed. I don't have that phone near me atm so I'd have to check the program name.

edit - looked in google play - not installed folder

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Not quite as simple as I was hoping for. Anyone know anything using an old router to set up a local area network with no internet connection?

I was thinking along the lines of a wifi security camera with a zoom lens linked to a router and viewing on a 7-10" tablet via some app with no internet necessary. Any thoughts? This is just for indoor 25m and trying to avoid trailing leads.

Most access points/routers can be set to broadcast a network and server as DHCP server. So connecting a few IP cameras to that wouldn't be an issue. you can then use the tablets to browse to the preferred lane.

Thanks for that - that seems worth investigating. I have a spare D-Link router, I'll do some homework, not really got a clue about this sort of stuff.

Power up te router - without a WAN/Internet connection.

Connect your PC with a cable and you should then be able to access rhe router settings on 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.254 or the default for the router. Set up the WiFi and get a cheap WiFi camera to try it with.

Thanks, yes that looks like the way to go, a cheap test will be worthwhile I think.

I think this is what you might be after. this uses 4 cameras with a TP-Link AP. the laptop and phone are also connected to the AP.
(no internet connection as demonstrated by the phone display)
