Vihtavuori Powder and Loads for 44.40?
Alliant powders seem to be fading away in the UK - is this something to do with non-EU compliance on something called 'Reach'? Dunno.
I'm therefore looking to switch to Vihtavuori. The only one of theirs I've used for years is N310 for .38sp loads, which for me has the edge on Bullseye.
I've bought a small tub of N133 to experiment with for my .223 loads where I've used Reloader 15 for years. I'd like to find the right Viht powder for 44.40 in my Uberti lever action rifle. I use 200gr RNFP cast bullets. The Viht site doesn't have load data for the 44.40. Has anyone here had any success with a Viht powder in a 44.40 load?

Vihtavuori produce a dedicated Cowboy Action Shooting powder - Tin Star (N32C) - but strangely enough they do not show any data for .44/40 or .45 Colt for this powder. I contacted them some years ago querying this but did not get a reply. I have used Tin Star in .44/40 with loads round about the same as Unique. I am not recommending this, merely saying I have done it.

My local dealers seem to have the Alliant powders in stock. They are REACH compliant so remain on sale in the UK.

For normal target loads---that is 800 to 1000 ft /sec--- you can use 44 magnum data. Just don't approach the maximum loads. The cowboy action powders are just a money making ploy---sold in small quantities for more money.

Not true of Vihtavuori N32C Tinstar, same price per 1 1/10th pounds as their other fast pistol N3** powders.
Now Trail Boss powder users are fools and their money.
Red Dot is the original "bulky" fast pistol powder, nothing new in these "special" cowboy action powders just the usual marketing scam make overs.

Lyman list several loads using alliant powders such as unique and 2400.
Also AA#2 or whatever the Lovex equivalent is now.
I would have thought N320 would be suitable.
If you were using Rx15 in 223 n140 would be a suitable replacement.
Kranks show unique/2400/rX15 as all being in stock.

44 Special load data could be used, begin with the start loads and work up over a chronograph.
I am a dedicated 44-40 shooter but will only use black powder in my loads.

I sent them a 'load request' from their web site form yesterday, so it'll be interesting to see if they ignore me also! Odd that they go to the trouble of selling a 'Cowboy Action' powder but ignore 44.40.redcat wrote:Vihtavuori produce a dedicated Cowboy Action Shooting powder - Tin Star (N32C) - but strangely enough they do not show any data for .44/40 or .45 Colt for this powder. I have a PDF of Viht Cowboy loads that I'll try to attach to this message. I use N340 in .357, .38, 9mm and .44 SPL/MAG and like it very much.

Expect higher velocities from those loads in a rifle.
