M1 Carbine

#1 Post by Dougan »

My father recently said he wouldn't mind getting an M1 Carbine - not a .22 RF version, but one in the original caliber (obviously converted to straight pull).

I've had a look online, and there don't seem to be many around....? Anyone have any idea how much they go for? And, are the reloading components easy enough to get..?

My understanding is that conversion is not allowed, the rifle must have been originally manufactured as straight pull. The thread below might give you some ideas of whats out there

Thanks for the info JonC - And welcome to the forum :good:

Hmmm...not looking good - Might have another look at the .22 copies...could be fun if you got a good one...

It's a shame you can't use the semi-auto classics anymore - I friend used to bring his Garand to fun shoots...it was cool the way it chucked the clip out after the last round... 8-)

last time I was in fenland Rural Sports they had some interesting staright pull stuff, think they had a G5 amongst other other things. They tend to have a bit more military style stuff than other shops I have visited.

That L1A1 is nice - I shot something similar in the cadets, but I can't remember excactly what it was...we just called it an SLR.

So, is the law, that you can't have semi-autos that have been converted - but can have ones that were built as 'straight pulls'. ?

As far as I am aware, yep thats right.

You can buy a bunch of bits to build a straight pull AR

You cant buy a ready assembled AR and convert it

havent a clue why though.

The reason you cannot convert to straight pull is once an S5 always an S5 regardless of what you do to it. As an example the straight pull AK47 clones (S1) were never intended to be automatic and in theory cannot be converted to automatic (S5)

I'm sure in last month's GunMart (or the month before) they had a half page article on straight-pull M1's

I saw a genuine M1 straight pull being shot last Sunday by a LERA member on Ash ETR, from memory I think I have only ever seen two of them.
