Type 38 Arisaka, reloading in the UK question.

#1 Post by Satyruk »

Hi, I'm new to the forum having found it while scouring the net for answers. Bit of a cheek to wade straight in with a question but here it comes anyway.

I am in the middle of acquiring all the major players b/a rifles from WW2 Enfield, Mauser, MAS etc and have stalled at the Arisaka.

The brass can be had (at breathtaking prices) but nobody seems to sell the right type of jacketed bullet here.
Is there anybody shooting a type 38 in the uk who can let me know where they get suitable FMJs or what they are doing to keep shooting. Would resizing Carcano bullets be viable?

Any pointers gratefully recieved.

Satyruk asked the following question in the milsurp thingy section I took the liberty of moving it here in case any one can help him.

You could use cast boolits if you slug your bore you could buy a suitable mould and roll your own. It would be a lot kinder on the old Girl as well. If you slug your bore you might even be able to purchase boolits from Dodgy rog. Ask Adam(Dromia) if you think cast boolits will do it for you he is the resident expert.

Welcome Satyruk.

Why don't you introduce your self on the New Members Forum?

What did the bore/groove measurements come out at when you slugged your barrel?

When you have that information then we are in a position to make suggestions for your rifle.

Bore/groove diameters vary on these rifles, I have seen some shoot well with standard .264" condoms but others like the larger bullet, Hornady do a very good 160 gn .267" round nose soft point for the Carcano. They are expensive though and you will need a expanding ammunition variation for them on your FAC.

I would find out the actual diameter of the PPU Carcano bullet before spending money on them.

The preferred way to get these old guns to give of their best and keep them intact for future generations is to shoot cast bullets in them
