Does that mean that any of the cartridges listed above can be used in conjunction with a suitably adapted .308 bolt ?

Yes - the 'adaption' usually being screwing the action into a suitably chambered barrel.

6XC would be another one for the .308 face shortlist.

Rox,

Perhaps you should have said onto instead of into?

The oversees (spelling intended) gentleman might not have chastised in his confusion?

Quite so, and I imagine that in the land of amour 'screwing-in' relates more closely to how the male and female parts interface, rather than just closing a thread with nothing stiffer than an upper lip.

So, with a suitable action and bolt(s), one could have a rifle with interchangeable barrels and shoot therefrom a wide variety of bullets ?

You don't need interchangeable barrels to shoot a wide variety of bullets, most calibres have a pretty good selection of types nowadays.

The variety in width I was thinking of was something along the lines of having a single action and receiver along with appropriate bolts to shoot everything from say, .45 ACP to 6.5mm. I doubt all those would go through the same barrel with a reasonable degree of performance and safety.
