Straight Pull L1A1 SLR advise and info

#1 Post by huntervixen »

I am shortly getting a Straight pull L1 and it ocurred to me the other day that I could use the empty gas tube off a deac L1, (to cosmetically fix the large hole left where it should be)... mind working overtime, I thought I could also use the gas dial and plug (with the back cut away and attached cosmetically to the front of the de-activated gas block), why not indeed, I thought to myself, after all I am not changing anything about the rifle Straight pull S1 classification itself....well think again because it's a great big no,no, with flashing red lights and sirens !

I thought I would contact a Section 5 dealer and run the idea past them.

They said Absolutly no way, don't do it ! Although it seems these parts are fine on deacs, as removed components they become prohibited section 5 parts!!!!

He said, add these to your Straight pull L1 and Plod could decide it was Section 5.

In fact I have had (fully UK legal with certs) old spec deac L1's in the past...curiusly although the Gas piston assembly is removed, barrel slotted, rodded etc, the gas block, plug, and tube are generally un-touched and would, theoretically be serviceable components!

I have seen the gas tube left untouched on (new spec) deacs also...So on a new spec deac these parts are deemed fine by the home office....but remove them and they are Section 5 components....yep, guess thats our rather odd firearm laws for you.

On the subject of hard extraction issues with L1's, what make of .308 do all yo L1owners find suits the rifle best?

Cheers, John.

Gavin at Anglo Custom Rifles was selling the straight pull L1A1's, I just had a look at his website and it looks like the gas block is still there (I believe a dummy is used) here are some pictures of one of Gavins L1A1 it might be worth dropping him a line (littlefraggle on the AirgunBBS sight)

Mmmm. Are the gas tube, block and plug classed as component parts? I wouldn't have thought they were. If not component parts, then not S5.....
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

But there is nothing to stop you from copying them and adding dummy items to your rifle surely?

My M14's got a dummy gas plug, nae hole in barrel so nae worries.

One of our club member's FAL shoots very well with RG L42 155gn ammo but it is fitted with a slightly extended cocking handle. My M14 works well with standard RG and the L42 155 but it doesn't like the MEN.

When i was going through the Section 5 debarcle over my SGC LRA9, i had to speak with the head honcho at the Home Office to find out when is a Section 5 gun not a Section 5 gun (sounds like a rubbish joke  ). The basic gist of it was that licensable compenent parts of any Section 5 gun, become Section 1 once they are removed. i.e. You could have a Section 5 SLR, take the barrel off and that would be a Section 1 item.

However, putting items from a de-act S5 gun on a working S1 gun could be determined as making it 'readily convertable', which is where you would qualify for 5 years service at her majesty's pleasure. :squirrel:

A dummy component is most likely the best way to go. And will probably be lighter too :good:

Absolutely spot on, which is why Clarke was able to reuse a significant number of components taken from the section 5 LRA9s, which were returned to him either directly or via the Constabularies involved, in the replacement section 1 LRA9s sent to those from whom the originals had been confiscated.

Hi all,

Thanks for the contributions everyone, I think dummy components are the way to go.

What about ammo guys, what works and what doesn't?

Cheers, John.

RG 146 and 155 works OK in my straight pull, MEN does not unless downloaded a bit & turned into 'mexican match', my reloads work fine.
