Parker Hale .303" Lee Enfield No 4 Sporter conversion

#1 Post by dromia »

Following on from Pe4kings sporter post in the Lee Speed thread here's my stalking rifle.

Its a Parker hale conversion on the Lee Enfield No 4 action with a "new" sporter barrel, pistol grip buttstock with cheek piece and sporterised forend. The wood was originally varnished but I stripped that off and applied a more weather proof linseed oil finish.

Been shooting this rifle for years now and it has taken 100's of beasts. Personally I can't see the need for a new over priced TIKSAkBLASMS sporter when there are fine British made sporters on the second hand market for a fraction of the price. My stalking loads will shoot 1" at 100yrds. If I was to work on it I could get that down to less, but its a stalking rifle and thats more accuracy than I need.

Dromia another nice one very similar to mine polished and blued it looks very well proportioned, with mine the top handguard and band were added by me if I decide on the scout scope it will have to come off again.
Is that an Armalon scope mount ?, they have a better lock up system than the one I have fitted not sure which one it is I think it may be a Fulton.
What scope is it you have on it ?.
What is a Sapper? This versatile genius condenses the whole system of military engineering and all that is useful and practical. He is a man of all work of the Army and the public ready to do anything or go anywhere, in short, he is a Sapper.

Yes it is an Armalon, pricey but the best rear scope mount I've found for the No 4 action.

Think on it this way Dave you gave someone a real bargain. :D

The scope is an old Ajack 4x, post and hair reticle.

I like to keep things simple, modern scopes seem to have more knobs and buttons than NASA. The post and hair is my favourite reticle can't be doing with these Mil dots and such, all that reticle clutter is just a waste of eyesight to me. The more you have to remember the more you have to forget.

Hi dromia,

Wow, a PH No.4 with an Armalon mount! That's exactly the set-up I've been on the lookout for here in Australia. I've seen a couple floating around on our usedguns website but they were nowhere near the pristine condition that yours appears to be in.

I have a couple of questions:

What is the weight? I've always guessed around the 4kg mark scoped and unloaded - maybe you can give me a more accurate number.

Does it balance well? I've found the original SMLE to be too forward-heavy for my liking.

Do you find that the comb height is well suited the the scope's sight line as it is mounted? PH's stock looks a lot more suitable for a scope that the original military stock.

Any answers are appreciated, thanks for posting the photos.

Hi Snowy3 welcome to the forum.

Just weighed the rifle with the sling, scope and unloaded. It came out at 9lbs dead, sorry but don't do the metric crap.

Rifle balances well for me and is easily pointable, its done well on the odd occassion when I've shot the running deer comps with it.

Regarding comb height I'm a left hander with rifles, so my cheek weld is on the reverse of the top of the comb and sight alignment is no problem, The pistol grip and comb height all help make the rifle easy to shoot, like all good rifles I never have to think about it when mounting its just "there".
