Swing Mk4

In an effort to improve my TR scores, I've traded in my Enfield convertion for a new Rifle - A Swing Mk4 action, in a Fultons stock. The barrel is about half way through it's life, but as I only shoot 500 rounds a year it should be good for a few seasons.

There's a question on the 'Swing' thread, asking if it's still a desirable action.....I can't wait to find out

Question: Moly grease has been used on the bolt to lubricate the front lugs, and in a recess near the back - I've been assured that this is correct on this type of bolt, but have never used grease before...is this correct?

Lovely rifle, good to see it has arrived at last, I look forward to hearing how it goes, have you decided what you will feed it with yet? . We use Milcomm TW25 Extreme Performance Grease on our bolts

The SwIng action is a true classic. By the Mk 4 most of the bugs had been worked out.

I own a SwIng and a RPA, stocked as near identical as I can. The SwIng was the gun that set the Queen's II record in 2002 (150.28 ex 150.30) that still stands and went on to win the South West Africa Cup (Namibian "Queens") in 2004. I used it this year to finish about 30th in HM the Queens Prize. It is about 27 yrs old - it's on its fourth barrel and my best estimate is that it has fired 25000 rounds. It had a firing pin failure in South Africa in 2000. Brian Jones changed the pin on the point with no more than a screwdriver and an Allen key and it functioned for another two weeks competition without attention - serviced when we returned to UK. Since then I have carried a firing pin and the tools for the job and have not needed them.

Lubricating the lugs, and the cocking piece, is a good idea. The SwIng turns through only 45 degrees to cock a very powerful spring, and reducing the incidental loads to a minimum makes it a much more friendly action to use. Such lubrication has no adverse effects, as long as you do not spray lube around to the point where it finds its way into the chamber.

What am I going to feed it?...Some RUAG, and home loads of course!....In fact I was going to ask if I could send you some cases for drilling and tapping, as soon as I get some rounds down it...

I shot next to a TR shooter one afternoon with a Swing, it was his first and only TR rifle and I think he said he had been shooting it for 17+ years. The Swing is a very special rifle and part of the Swenson/Ingram legacy. I wonder if any of the originally S&L barrelled versions are left these days.

Thanks for that Iain - I've always been very sparing with lubrication on the bolt (don't even go there guys) - so good to know the info on this action.

I knew Swing's history before I bought it...and I'm sure that if you like them, then it'll be plenty good enough for me
