Helpful Police over here!

#1 Post by Sandgroper »

Only been out of quarantine a couple of days but I can already see the difference between the UK and the Falklands...after a discussion about security arrangements, I'd pretty much given up hope of owning firearms here* until I got the following reply,

"Yes go ahead and apply. We can sort out your security further down the road…"

Not the reply I was expecting...now just waiting for the club to get back to me and then I'll put my application in! fingerscrossed

About 3500 people live in the Falklands (not including service personal at Mount Pleasant and Mare Harbour - about 1500 IIRC). The vast majority of people live in Stanley. There are other settlements but for all intents and purposes Stanley (East Falkland) is it - West Falkland for example has a population of about 200. The total area is equal to about half the size of Wales. What surprised me was that outside of Stanley Common there is no public land - the Falklands are privately owned and trespass laws are taken seriously. From what I've been told, most farmers/land owners are happy to allow access if asked but if you don't ask, you're in serious trouble.

Climate is pleasant albeit windy - given that Summer is tailing off average temp is about 10-12°C and during winter it doesn't drop below -5°C at night. The saying if you don't like the weather wait 10 minutes is very apt here! However, it very easy to get sunburnt here. The UV index is higher than would be expected mostly due to the thinner ozone layer but equally the cooler weather and wind means anyone not used to protecting themselves from the sun get burnt quickly.

Will Question 1 on the application be: Can you recognise an Argentinian?

Excellent.

I lost one colleague from my Dartmouth intake down there and three others were sunk. Another I knew there, pessed the button to send two Mk VIIIs away, with well known consequences.

Good to hear from you. We had slight covering of snow at the range today( Saturday) but it will not last long. Keep us up to date with things.
Cheers
