I believe the proof house will not fire a proof round through a gun if upon inspection it's still in proof. They will still mark the gun as newly proof as the inspection suffices.

There is no "valid length" of a proof mark. Once there, it's there. Section 122(3) of the Gun Barrel Proof Act 1868 creates the offence of sell or exchanging or attempting to sell or exchange an arm without a proof mark. I've just had a Hoo-Haa with an RFD over this. Likewise, the GTA appear ignorant of legislation and the Proof Houses themselves appear to be nothing more than Dens of Iniquity!!
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

If it is out of proof I don't think you can even give it to another shooter. If the barrel is modified in such a way that the proof marks are still valid then there's no problem.
Arming the Country, one gun at a time.

Good deals with Paul101, Charlotte the flyer, majordisorder, Charlie Muggins, among others. Thanks everybody.

If that is all that has been done then I would argue it has not been weakened in any way so still in proof
