Gunsmithing question...easy fix: re-locate front sight base?

Rotating the barrel would then throw the rearsight dovetail & ejector notch off true.
More work than just fixing the front sight base

In my, admittedly limited, experience sights are generally silver soldered on (when not screwed on). You would probably be fine with a low melting point jewellers silver solder and could possibly limit the prep (and thereby damage to the blueing) to the area concerned with a small Swiss file and solder with a light application of a pencil flame.

I've done several Mosins M44s in this manner (I removed the bayonet brackets entirely) and damage to bluing was next to nothing - by their very nature the barrels get very hot in use so can withstand a fair bit of heat without touching the finish..

Well, in the Forth Reich bayonets are not allowed as a permanent fixture.

I know of a few FAC holders that have a M-N carbine on FAC, but they are not allowed to take the rifle out of the house as they'd then have an offensive weapon in a public place!

Who says they cannot ??

You would have a reasonable excuse in it being permanently attached to the rifle for which you have a FAC.

If you took this to its natural conclusion, the brass / steel buttplates on WW2 rifles are there as offensive weapons too - not for comfort !!!

Wont happen.

Simply nonsense. A probationary officer on day one on his beat understands "reasonable excuse". And so does the PS who would need to charge. As would the CPS liason. As would the CPS.

In fact - being pedantic - something like a SMLE or K98 or Mosin is a MADE offensive weapon for the purposes of the definition of offensive weapon. The FAC is the reasonable excuse.

So the presence of a bayonet makes no difference - even without it, you have an made offensive weapon ( something designed and manufactured as a weapon regardless of the context in which it is later used )

They can say all they like but the definition is there in print as is the reasonable excuse aspect.

Because I already had some really nice Mossie M44s but also like the M38 look. Now have one of each and sold the others.
