New tunnel range. Scottish Borders. Braidwood clay ground.

#1 Post by saddler »

Have visited the clay set-up a few times, but paid my first visit to the 100m tunnel range today.

Will have to get photos later as didn't have phone/camera on me.

Normal tunnel environment (harmonics, etc.)
Small neat firing point area/room.

Quite a well designed firing set up: a sturdy bench with decent shooting mat, which quickly converts to ambidextrous bench.

Shots are automatically monitored on laptop, giving H & W data for the shot string in mm.
Supposedly measured digitally by sound at impact area.

Fees are £15/30 mins or £30/hour

The negatives.
Target is ONLY at 100m distance.
The target face isn't "standard", nor can you use your own targets.
(the centre today was a large ragged hole, of considerable size: not conducive to accuracy)
While the laptop screen IS brilliant, no option to print results or otherwise save them is annoying.
No chronograph facility; would be very was to add given the proximity of mains electric, laptop, etc.

Would I go again? Possibly....

In comparison, the Livingston 100m indoor range at Morton Clays is more flexible (but has atrocious lighting)....it's the same price & closer to me...

Overall though, not a bad location & facility.
One MAJOR error/issue. The website states the max caliber is 7mm. This is something they need to address.

By comparison the NCB tunnel is open 24/7 every day of the year, has a camera and reloading facilities and you can use your own targets, most importantly it is GBP1.00 for as long as you wish for NCB members. We have been in there way into the night on more than one occasion.

North Cotes Butts Rifle Club, it is in the Lincolnshire Wolds and membership fees are based on location so very cheap for people located such as yourself, the ranges are approved up to 15,000 Joules.

However anyone using anything close to that in the tunnel range deserves a medical/psychiatric assessment! lol I used an unsuppressed .223 in there and that was bad enough

As they do at Calton Moor as well. I've shot my .303 and my .308 at 100 yards there. You certainly know you've fired a rifle!

You have not lived until you have shot an un-moderated .308 down a steel tubed tunnel range....
