I obviously don't have a slot on my ticket just yet so what do people normally do, apply for a slot and look for a suitable rife or find something and the apply for a slot?
The former if you know what you want but if I want to keep my options open the latter would be better. Are dealers happy to take a deposit and wait for the variation to come through?

Yes you need to know what you want, unless your licensing authority is sympathetic to noting caliber slots as simply 7.62 without the case length (x39, x51, x54R) designated for instance.

If they have the space and people aren't fighting over the firearm, then yes I'm sure they would.

310 Cadets are obsolete calibre and can be bought as such without an FAC.

You only need to put it onto your FAC when you wish to shoot it and possess ammunition for it.

Might have to have a nose round Fultons on Saturday to get an idea what's available.

M1 carbine as Saddler said is a good shout. Anything in 6.5x55 is a good shout but I guess if you reload you can tailor a round to shoot well and shoot comfortably
