Vickers

#1 Post by Stuck »

Hi all,

A good friend of mine that died a few years ago had a deact WW1 Vickers set up in his lounge that I always thought looked amazing kukkuk

I'm seriously considering buying a WW2 era vickers but don't know much about the values of the different models, should I buy one the only thing I am paying for is a piece of history, without the history it would be nothing but a very expensive paper weight.

With that in mind could anyone with any experience of Vickers MG's comment on the price & authenticity of this please?

Thanks.

Mick.

I used to have a deactivated Lewis Gun amongst others, I can tell you the transit case looks original to me, very similar to mine. It looks OK, but I don't know very much about the Vickers. My only comment is the cooling system (hose/can) are missing. Personally I wouldn't buy an incomplete deact, you have to think of the resell value and what the next person will be looking for. I'd also suggest deactivated guns are very expensive at the moment. Guns I bought a good few years ago are now 300% higher than when I bought them. Personally I think the prices will come down significantly over the next couple of years. I used to collect militaria and the collectors don't have the money any more. I recently sold some more of my collection and I couldn't sell it for more than I bought it for 10 years ago. The stuff I sold a couple of years ago I made 100+% profit on...

Cant say whether its real or not , but what I do know is the Royal Docks , where HMS Victory is have been selling a lot of hardware off recently , as that is in Portsmouth it could well be from the same source , so a fair bet would be genuine .

The Maxim is good value and has an interesting history while being half the price of the Vickers if you want a nice display piece.
My office would be bare without one.....

Mmm - too many suppositions - no proof WHERE this has come from

Having seen quite a few adverts online from the same seller, I get the impression that they're a shop in the vicinity of the Docks, not part of them.

I also get the impression, from the other prices they charge/want for some of their kit, that they're mainly aiming at the tourist on the day - someone who's been to see the historical items on display, and wants a little something to take home - as they are very over-priced compared to other dealers with similar items for sale.

There's a nice jacketed one here and a few hundred quid cheaper, but still no cooling system AFAIK.

He seems to have quite a lot of them, so he's probably somewhat of an authority on the subject.

I had a small collection of de-acts until recently, sold off a 1929 SMLE and a Remington-Rand M1911A1, got a lot more for the 1911A1 than I paid for it (not hard as I got it for free) and the SMLE was around £100 more than I paid for it when I bought it around 6/7 years ago. Both would have gone for more if it weren't for the missing deact certificates, the 1911A1 didn't have one when I got it, the SMLE was leant to a friend for a display and he lost the damn thing.

I still however, possess a S&W Victory Model revolver, which wont be sold, that was a present from my Girlfriend from just after we found out she was pregnant. I also have a Lithgow Bren, this I've contemplated selling, I bough it for £300 at the same time as the SMLE, It came with the transit box, spare parts kit, spare barrel bag, sling, 3 extra mags (all in factory grease) and the rain cover. As an investment, it's done well, I reckon I could get around £600 for it at least as it is like new! Though I've though of selling it as it hasn't seen the light of day for nearly 4 years due to university I still have a plan of it moving into the new house as, well come on it's just F***ing cool
