Your most satisfying shot ...?

#1 Post by Mezzer »

We've all done it!

Just when you think that all the odds are against you and a gentle squeeze on the trigger produces a spectacular and sometimes unexpected result. These events are rare and certainly worthy of discussion over a glass of the amber nectar down the pub (or hopefully, on this forum).

For me, it happened at Warcop on a day where the wind was blowing at around 12mph from the eight o' clock position. The target was a figure 11 planted at 988 yards (lasered). My bangstick of choice was a vintage Swing mark 1 of 1972 production fitted with a scope and bipod. Ammo was self-loaded 149gn tracer with 40gn of VV N140 behind it.

My first two rounds of six got me on to the target holding high and to the left with the next four striking the target (confirmed by my spotter). Absolutely delighted I was. :shakeshout: The wind effect could be clearly seen from about 500 yards out with the tracer describing a lazy arc to the right before hitting the target.

I'll probably never be able to do it again but it certainly made my day and I went home a very happy guy.

Feel free to chip in with your own experiences guys. It all makes good reading.

The shot that most amazed me, and about the only one that I actually remember was before I had my FAC. My friend took me to an open day at Bisley and let me use his .308 on the 1000 yard range. It was pouring with rain and a fair breeze. On my very first shot I got a V bull! Of course it went a bit downhill after that……………………

Most satisfying shot? Probably shooting a V-bull with my No.4 at 900yds. Factory ammo, service sights as issued, and the service sling fitted to the standard service swivels.

(it took me about ten rounds to get there, granted, but damn it was a good feeling to nail it!)

Game shooting a few years ago and it was the last drive of the day and my last steel cartridge, a wayward duck separated from the group and had gone unnoticed by the guns closest to it so i took a shot and killed it stone dead. It was about 40 yards up and 70 yards away from me tongueout

Probably not the 'done thing' but the gamekeeper didn't mind and even bought me a drink back at the clubhouse afterwards for it :good:

Probably popping a running rabbit at around 50m with my .22rf, knocking it down stone dead. The rifle is a BRNO 1983 with a £100 hawke scope on it, nothing special but a great little work horse!

Another point- reloading tracer, I didn't know the bullet heads were available?

I would say my most satisfing shot was back in september 2007, it was the first time i fired my MK IV Martini Henry on Kingsbury Range at 300 yards. The tacticool crowd were suprised to see such a ancient piece of technology on the range. I only had 20 cartridges (all i could afford back then). and i only had purchased my mold and press the day before. Most were splattered over the target, most were in the black, My last shot of the day was a perfect V- Bull. It encouraged me to collect and study more of these old victorian service rifles.

Any of the 10 that made up the 600 yard shoot in the Counties Short Range this year. It being late I couldn't see the colour of the score panel for each shot – they all looked black to me, and I'd been ribbed about avoiding the V in the Long Range match. Unusually, the coach and plotter weren't offering me any feedback whatsoever. At the end of the shoot it turned out the marker hadn't had to touch the score panel the whole shoot - not since he'd stuck it in showing the orange side for the first shot. Had a big inside grin after that, and it perfectly finished-off a very satisfying afternoon's shooting.

I guess my most satisfying shot would have to be my first ever at 1100yds with my target rifle, hand loads AND getting it in the black! 2nd was also in the black - first time I'd converted an inner 4!!
