F class, what calibre ?

If I was to put together an F class rifle what would be the best claibre for out to 1000+ yrds.?

Easy to load for, good barrel life, able to shoot high BC boolits using readily available components and dies so nothig too esoteric or experimental.

What calibres are currently delivering the goods on the point?

I've just moved up from 6.5/284 (fairly heavy barrel wear) to 7mm - straight 284 better barrel wear.

Thie 'Big Boys' are shooting 30/338 and such like, very heavy barrel use.

The good thing about 6.5/284 and 7mm is that .308 shell holders etc. will do the job.

I have simply used an expander mandrell and changed the neck sizing bush.

Same action, different barrel and heavier bullet for better wind riding.

Thanks John 284/7mm was speaking to me as a sensible calibre.

What to the shooters of calibres on either side of it think?

.284 shehane or maybe a .260 of some kind would work well. Also I would seriously think about an Ackley style Improved 6.5x55 - I reckon it could have good potential.

Not sure about these tweaked cases there David that just give a wee bit extra room.

Faffed around with a 243 AI once upon a time and couldn't see the point really, probably works better on some cases than others.

Mind you someone told me the other day there was a smokeless propellant other than cordite, who would have thought it. :shock:

Adam, in an ideal world you need to look for something that gives you access to good quality brass at sensible prices - Lapua should do this, plus high BC bullets (Not boolits) that do not cost the earth, this is going to mean 6mm/6.5mm/7mm. A good example is the new 7mm SMK 180's are just over GBP30 - Berger equivalents are probably around the fifty quid mark right now, of course if you have a friendly RFD

This is why I say look at 6.5x55 based stuff, cheap good quality brass, good BC bullets and a proven track record at 1000 yards before you start tweaking it. (Good hunting round as well)

i am shooting a 6.5-284 at the moment and it an oustanding round for both 1000 and 1200 i am laso getting a .284 sheahne built at the moment for the 180 berger vlds but they are pricey at about £470 per 1000

lapua do indeed do 6.5-284 brasss and yes it will bneck up to 7mm np

the shehane is an improved straight .284 but with 10 thou taken out of the case taper allowing more volume they should be able to throw a 180 vld in the region of betwean 2990 and 3100 fps depending on powderr i.e. 4831sc or r17
