I hope he gets his air-rifle back without delay.

'Summary' justice would've been if a shotgun was used :x Just glad the lad didn't get prosecuted, makes a change :o Hopefully he'll be getting his air rifle back soon too

His statement to the paper covers many points of law which are requited for self defence. I would be amazed if this was off the cuff and not a prepared statement put together with the help of someone who knew what he was talking about.
(Notice how he had secured his air rifle in keeping with the current law)
If he had used a shotgun or any other gun in this case, or the suspect had died, I believe that the Victim would have had his day in court, but as long as he kept to those basic facts, he would have been found not guilty by a jury who was properly directed.
