I wonder how many contributors here a capable of doing so. on a regular basis Sat at a bench with the rifle surrounded by sandbags and the like, supported front and rear maybe, but the shooter still has to dope the wind and therein lies the art. Most people here will probably shooting on ranges where the distance to the target is known so estimating range is not a problem Deer stalkers will probably shoot deer at ranges not exceeding two hundred yards so a rifle zeroed at that range will be suitable for his needs. An old stalking adage comes to mind… ‘Aim at Hair not Air.’ It is not uncommon to misjudge range usually thinking a deer is further away than it is I maintain that if a hobby shooter can consistently shoot tight groups shot placement follows naturally.

My statement yesterday did sound a tad flippant

At 1000 yards the V in F Open is 5" in diameter and my goal is keep it in that part of the target. Yesterday we were shooting at 200 yard targets (maybe 15" diameter?) At just over 1000m. Given I was shooting a 7,62x51 in rainy cold conditions with limited visibility keeping it on the black was my goal. It is fair to say if I was shooting my P14 or something similar I would have been very happy to get every third round on the frame in those conditions.

Shooting with a Danish sniper team last year taught me many new and worthwhile lessons and led to a rethink of exactly how I shoot a T******l type rifle and I have modified my approach to shooting with this type of rifle accordingly.

EDIT - I should have added the hand span reference was to a 7mm with a front co-axial rest, rear bag, 42X scope and shooting virtually free recoil.

Yesterdays shooting was with a 7,62x51 using a 16X 'scope wound to maximum with a Harris bipod, and a rear squeeze bag. On days like yesterday I try to shoot as light as possible and carry the minimum of kit, so rifle, 50 rounds and me is about it.

I think it was Mike357 who said he would like to know what forum members looked like so I changed my Avatar, not a great picture though. I was in a brand new CV90 with a 35mm Bushmaster at the time doing some turret tests (Shoots sub MOA at 600 metres) It was sub zero and the Viking was firmly ensconced in the back with a video display to see how we were doing, and no doubt with heating as well.

Barney..

Re: your post..

Jenks do you know which were your first or last 3 rounds on each target?? and when zeroing do you fire 5 or 10 round groups? before making any adjustments???? I ask as I do this all the time and looking at your targets here,,,good shooting by the way,,,,have a look at your hold,,,the other thing I would look at is snatching the trigger a little bit,,,thats why I ask about your first three or last three rounds....you may know different,,,but am I right to a degree???
By the way not trying to teach you to suck eggs here....

I have no recollection as to the sequence of shots. I think at the time I was messing aroung trying different powders/loads. Normally when zeroing I shoot just three rounds if they form a reasonably group I go ahead and adjust the sights. when practicing I do fire more shots. I nearly always cock it up once I get over about five rounds.
:(

Two five round groups using a different powder to the ten round groups posted earlier.

Now that was a case where skilled shot placement was most definitely required.

I was once in a group of rifles being driven round and placed in high seats for a doe cull. Among the company was a titled German. He told us of an occasion on one of his estates where he was placing rifles in high seats to shoot driven pigs. As he put each rifle in his seat he issued them the instruction. Do not under any circumstances leave your seat until you are told it is safe to do so. He placed an American gentleman in his seat and issued the warning. Later the Yank shot a massive Boar The beast appeared to him to be dead and forgetting or choosing to ignore his hosts warning he climbed down the ladder and went to examine his prize, leaving his rifle at the base of the tree which contained his seat. As he neared his prize he noticed it twitched. he produced a revolver from his belt and administered a coup de grace. where upon the clearly undead pig sprang to his feet. The yank fled and just made it back to the safety of his ladder. A millisecond or so before the pig. which fell dead at the foot of the ladder.
