?? I had to get a 2nd lower receiver entered on my FAC when i had my AR, and then when i sold it i had to deposit it with an RFD (where it still languishes!). I was told both the upper and lower receivers are license-able parts...

A complete upper receiver is a controlled part (receiver, BCG and barrel complete) but individual non-pressure bearing parts aren't.

If you dont mind me asking - what twist rate did you go for John?

SAAMI is 1:8 ( I thought ) but I wondered if 1:7 would be better for the heavy stuff.
Do Border ream the chamber for you as well? Or did Mark do that ?

+1 That's what I'm about to do. Get every part you want from the ground up and save money doing it. Plenty of stripped parts in the states. Get a barrel chambered for your bolt and order the other parts yourself

John MH - How did you get the border barrel and bolt proofed from your RFD. Did they fit it to other parts for proofing or did they use yours. Didn't think they could handover unproofed parts or do you have 30 days to proof yourself? Understand proofing is not necessary for imports unless you intend to sell on.

I had thought of that, if you have any info for sourcing a reasonably priced upper & lower etc. I'd be very interested indeed, was the bolt supplied with the side charging handle?.
Side charging handle would be a bit tricky to machine/fit yourself but these are available out of the box:

Barrel supplied by RFD, fitted then sent to proof, parts supplied by me.

All parts out of stock, I managed to get a couple of Mega Side Charging uppers from another company in the US last year as well as a Youngs Manufacturing Bolt Carrier. Finding someone who has stock and is willing to export will probably be a struggle.

Alot of parts are out of stock in the US at the moment due to the current climate. If you aren't willing to wait and happy to pay more there is always gunbroker.com. Finding a company that is willing to export is difficult, which is why you find an exporter with FFL that can export for you. All other companies you choose then send to them, then they export to you in one lot. I pay about 5% to my exporter for the value of the parts I'm importing plus shipping and export licence. Alot of companies I've spoken to say they won't export (they can't be bothered with the hassle) but are more than happy to send to my exporter.

So are you saying RFD handed over unproofed barrel to you, you fitted to parts at home then sent to proof yourself? Do you have 30 days to do this or something? Thought RFD's couldn't hand over unproofed parts.

No, barrel chambered and fitted to upper by RFD, I supplied bolt carrier he fitted bolt and muzzle brake, then sent to proof by RFD before being passed back to me. I supplied handguard from WOA. So no pressure bearing parts transferred until proofed via RFD.
