Need your help and advice please! Been told by my FLA that I must get my moderators bought in the next 6 months or they will remove the permission from my certificate (had it on for too long and didn't get it bought!) So am looking for a mod, ideally one for both rifles because I am a cheapskate (or plain skint). Use both rifles for deer stalking, occasionally for fox control but am not really a foxing man. Could you let me have your input on what worked best for you, what is most effective, lightness, feel, balance, any bits of info really to help me make a more informed decision. The .243 is a Sako 75 hunter, the .30-06 is a Sauer 202 European. Thanks for your help!

We have a mod maker in the Vendors and Innovators section and I do wonder if he could build something suitable for both rifles.

Sounds like you should keep your money in your pocket to be honest-if you have managed this long without one - then do you really need to spend out and buy something you do not really need? - pause for thought?

If things change later, then you can always put in for a variation.

A 30 cal mod would cover both as long as the threads were compatible,or convert the slots to rifle,lbr or muzzle loaders :)

Good point! But the only reason I have not done it earlier is that I didn't have the money available. In addition I have new ground that is close to some seasonally busy areas, and I would like the noise suppression really. Also, I ain't getting any younger and the noise levels must be starting to affect the ears a bit. Especially the .30 cal!

Where in the Lakes are you? the MiL has two pubs in the lakes - one near to Levens and the other Kirby Lonsdale.

How long have you had the authority to acquire for? I would also, let whichever shooting organisation you're with know as well, just to cover yourself in case you don't get a moderator and it's considered a partial revocation.

The other option if you can't get anything within the time limit is to 1 for 1 the moderator slot/s for another 's1 firearm' to keep the slot/s live.

FWIW Suffolk FLA expect you to fill a variation within 3 years and would want to see extenuating circumstances before (I expect) considering an extension of time.

My only personal experience of fullbore moderators is of the Reflex range which some don't like as they aren't strippable. I've always given mine an internal squirt of Leggia oil when cleaning the host rifle and, touch wood, have had no probs in 10 years of continuous use.
To use the same mod on two rifles, you'll need the muzzles to be turned to the same diameter and threaded and separate bushes to support the rear of the mod - unless both barrels of the same diameter at that point.
When I last bought a mod, it had to be proofed, which I always thought a bit of a con but you'll need to check how things stand now.

I have heard that the reflex, being non-strippable, was prone to degradation over time, but then most comments have said they are fine if "squirted" with some kind of protectant. I do like the look of the Ase but that's a bit like wanting a certain car because you like the colour, isn't it.
Also thought it was relatively common practice to have one mod for two rifles. Seems I may not be correct?

If both can have the muzzles at the same diameter and thread and providing that the hole up the middle will safely accommodate the larger calibre of bullet there isn't an issue and it's a sensible thing to do.
