My oldest son spent a lifetime in Iraq in 2007-08 as an National Guard infantry sergeant doing convoy escorts from Kuwait to northern Iraq and back. He told us while he was there that nothing was going on but later on I saw the pictures of the destroyed vehicles from some of his runs. One soldier was KIA from his unit so they had a pretty safe run. I dreaded coming out of the house each morning at 5 a.m. to put the flag up in fear of an Army sedan parked outside waiting for the house lights to come on. After 9 years he decided enough was enough and didn't reenlist.

He encountered UK troops in southern Iraq and lots of good things to say about them.

Always good to come home from such a place and praise to your son and all the others members of our armed forces who are making a difference to our lives.

Thank you.
