Does anyone have any experience of reloading .410 supersonics?

I am building a little folding .410 with an integral sound moderator for humane despatch and other stuff and would like to keep things very quiet. The problem is it is a 2.5" chamber so Magnasonic are out of the question, hence the need to load some subs.

Thoughts anyone?

We have a Breton Gaucher Phantom .410 that is incredibly quiet with subsonic loads, but that has a 3" chamber and so off-the-shelf cartridges are fine in it. We've looked at homeloading for it but not done so yet, though we know someone who has, and very successfully too. We'll ask questions...

When you say "incredibly quiet", how far away would you need to be in order to hear no noise from the canned bang escaping at all?

Well, ooman, that depends upon geography. Standing right in front of it, you'd never hear it ... Standing off to one side, out of harm's way as it were, you might hear a 'phut' or ''thwok', it really is almost Hollywood silencer quiet, though we ought to point out that the Phantom has a big moderator. It's quieter than an air rifle. In the countryside, with subsonic cartridges, you'd perhaps hear it 20 or 30 feet away. Ideal for taking care of rats around stables without frightening the horses. In a busy street, perhaps not at all. Not that we're suggesting you go and try 'sassinating Charles de Gaulle with it of course.

I have had ago at loading 410 for a mate who has a single shot hushpower.
He has been buying factory stuff but its sodding expensive - he has a trap and several acres and the extended family like busting clays!
I set up some simple tools for loading. Sizing the brass I use a Lee 45acp carbide die that is bored out. I made a new decapping rod for it. Cant remember off hand which shell holder I used. I made up a seating punch used in another die for seating primers. All roll crimped using cork wads.
I got some data from clay and game - tbh not much. There are some light loads in the 8/9/10 gram area - even these were ok on clays out to 20yds or so.
Its a bit like loading 44 special loads in a 44 mag case.

Stripey sort, yes SUBsonic, my bad. Typically there is never a grown-up to proof read when you need one. I did look at the Bretton and Gaucher, they are lovely things and super cheap second hand, however they are a full length gun and are rather conspicuous when carried in a slip over a shoulder.

I have no experience of rolling my own subs, but would you mind sharing details of the porting you have done to the barrel? Does the moderator overhang the barrel?

I have a similar project in mind based on a Remi 1100 .410.

I have a Mossberg 500 .410 with hush power, but the porting inside that is basically a few holes drilled through the barrel. I was hoping to mill some slots in the other one, more akin to the inside of the A-Tec A12 moderator.

Rarms, the moderator is virtually flush with the end of the barrel, the actual overhang is around 6,0mm and this is only there to bring what should be a marginal S1 shotgun previously held on S2 to a legal 24" (It was about 1/4"under before) I do plan on venting from the end of the barrel plug and will probably add an article to my Journal and link it here when it is finished which is probably over the weekend, unless life conspires against me.
