Hi all
Just bought myself a Marlin 336 in 30-30 Winchester. I’ll be reloading the spent cases, probably with Prvi Partizan bullets as they are relatively cheap. This is an unfamiliar calibre for me, and after comments in my previous thread, I was wondering if anyone else uses these, and what powder/ weight of powder is a good combination?

I don't load for it but if I did would be using N140.
I guess you probably wont be shooting past 200yds?

That’s what I was thinking. I was looking at the Lee reloading manual and some other information and they never seem to be specific about bullets other than weight. Bullet manufacturers and powder manufacturers seem to, but only for Lapua and Sierra, higher end stuff, but nobody mentions the budget stuff.

.30-30 has been a favourite of mine for a couple of decades. Quality bullets are the way forward. Cheap bullets are just a waste of powder and primers. I’m still loading with H335 for loads that are deer legal and I can drop onto the target board at 600 yards. With 165gn lead bullets and 8gns of Tin Star, it’s a low powered, cheap and effective gallery load nice out to 100.

A great versatile cartridge that is becoming more popular in the UK when it’s versatility is discovered. But honestly, cheap bullets out of any cartridge will not show its full potential.

Thats the problem I've found with using PPU bullets... theres no reloading data for them, so you do a "best guess" and start very low with lots of test loads.
By the time you've found a working load, you've run out of bullets!!
For this reason nowadays I tend to stick "big name" bullets that have reloading data for them..

But surely its the same with any new bullet. If you are developing a load with a bullet that you haven't used before you don't just jump in you start low.

Yes, but when you have reloading data for a bullet and powder combination, you can play safe and start 10% low and work up as always recommended.
When you have to start guessing where to start based just on the bullet weight, you, (or at least I do), start a lot lower.

You should never load below 60% case fill with medium to slow rifle powders.

Bloody good advice 60% assuming they have used to right powder, seen too many newbies attempted incorrect reloads powder too much/Little wrong type. Cases incorrectly sized and loaded. Newbies should attend a club training session before being allowed on the range with there potentially lethal reloads " I could be sat next to one so I always ask and keep an eye on them"

600 yards with a 30/30... incredible.. loads of reloading information for 30/30... the brand of bullet is irrelevant.. just consider the weight and check the Lyman reloading manuals.. a 2 inch group at 100 yards is excellent..
