Scrapping off an old rifle.

#1 Post by bhodge »

A hypothetical question....
I've recently bought a used rifle for which spares are almost non-existent.
My question is - if I was to buy another complete rifle of the same type, to use as a spares donor rifle. Which component parts would need to be handed over to the police when I wanted to remove it from my ticket?

Barrel, receiver and bolt. Assuming these are not the spares you need ?

You do not need to involve the police, go to your local rfd and ask the person to take the bits/cut them up.

I'd need bolt components - firing pin & extractor, together with the ejector.
I'd happily hand in the barrel, receiver and stripped bolt.
Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

I get to cut up a few rifles and shotguns that have been handed in every year. I normally take any usable spares off and bung them in a bag, chop the barrel off and save the bit if it is stainless and a good diameter as it is handy for odd machining jobs and the rest goes in the saw with the woodwork destined for the stove. The real problem is chopping tough parts as they rip the teeth off the bi-metal blades I use so on occasion it is angle grinder time. My view is if a rifle comes in complete and I can salvage good usable spares I will do the job free of charge, if however it has been stripped of interesting parts and I need to spend time on chopping and RFD entries and advising the police it has been permanently scrapped it is chargeable work so GBP36.00 for the job for someone I have never met. If it is an existing customer I will undertake the work free of charge.

Surrender the "bits" at any Police Station Enquiry Office (that you may happen to still find open)... Free of charge...

You can have the bolt and all other parts (except barrel and receiver) as spares for the rifle you shoot, these two bits you have listed individually on the FAC and will need to be scrapped or handed in to an rfd. The bolt is controlled but although you'll need an FAC to hold it isn't listed, controlled much like shotgun cartridges.

Good deals with Paul101, Charlotte the flyer, majordisorder, Charlie Muggins, among others. Thanks everybody.
