Recommend me a good shooting vehicle

Ok chaps, I'm looking at getting some sort of 4x4 to get me round my new permission and have been looking at Suzuki SJ413's and the like.
These although old and hard to find in reasonable nick seem a good bet. Fold down windscreen on some models to shoot without getting out and with the pick up versions someone can shoot from the back over the roof while one drives.
Are there any other 4x4 vehicles that are small and versatile like the SJ's/Jimny's?
Oh, and I've only got a grand at the most to spend.

Wrong time of the year for looking at cheap 4x4, after winter is best time to buy.
If you're not looking at serious mud, then old CRV or Rav 4 with a sunroof might be in your budget.

Didn't those little Suzukis have a rep for rolling over? I seem to recall a work colleague had one and he was always complaining about how unsafe it felt.
I'd suggest an old Landy but it appears you are po'.

Ahh, thought that was what it meant. Its going to be a part time shooting/hack vehicle so dont want to spend a lot.

They're often bought by and for the inexperienced driver, so like any 4x4 a swerve at speed will lead to a bad day.
Although it does mean there's a ton of used spares on the market, so not always a bad thing.

I got a Jimny last year for range use & it's been great. 03 plate, cost £1300 (eBay).
I'd actually been after a Delica for a few years, but the Jimny was a fraction of the price so I took the plunge.
It's a bit slippery on-road in the wet due to the mud tyres, but I've never felt it to be unstable, and it controls remarkably well in the slide!
Fuel tank is small, driving position is a little cramped, but I still love it, and it's been cheap and easy to run and maintain.
I just wish I had another 6 inches (in the back, for hard cases for very long target rifles), but it's not a major problem.
Here it is after the Welsh "National" win last year.

Are the Jimnys a seperate chassis like the SJ's?
Are they just an updated SJ?

Yes.

Don't know, but Wikipedia describes the third generation (what we know here as the Jimny, i.e. 1998 onwards) as "all-new". I think there are few if any parts in common with the earlier (SJ) models.
