Can anyone recommend a paint stripper that is good for hard finish lacquer on a rifle stock. My normal approach is failing to get me anywhere so I need something spiteful and pleasantly hazardous to remove the finish on a Remington rifle stock please.

Due to EU regs the good old fashioned nitromors is no longer available without being in the trade as I found out when I undertook a stock strip.
But, with the EU bods being very directional they overlooked the car spraypaint suppliers who still sell good old weapons grade stripper and dirt cheap too
Find a car paint supplier Dave and fill ya boots for about a fiver a litre

I use Dial from B&Q. The Wilco from Wilkinsons works well, too ..... I think it's the same as the Dial, just with a different name on it. Follow the instructions, and it will work on any stock. At least it always has for me. The Nitromors is totally cr@p.

Yep, don't bother with the green nitromors. Tried using it to remove a tacky CZ 452 stock finish and it barely touched it.

I use Rustins STRYPIT paint & varnish stripper it's not cheap but was recommended by a near neighbour who is a carpenter and uses it. Worked even on a pre dipped hydro treated stock.

Slap a load on and leave it for an hour, and then slap another load on. Leave that for another +/- hour, then you should be able to scrape the varnish/finish off. I normally use a Stanley knife blade as a scraper. A toothbrush or similar is needed for any chequered bits.
Flush well under a running tap and it's job done!

Some people recommend wrapping the wood in cling film over the applied paint/varnish stripper to prolong it's action. Might be worth a try?

This is the stuff you need. It's aggressive stuff - like the old Nitromars when you would stand and watch that paint / lacquer just bubble up and fall off. Don't waste your time on the B&Q stuff on the shelves. It's pricey but lasts a long while. I use it for stripping motorcycle frames.
I used it on my M1 Tribute stock for my Ruger and the lacquer and paint (yes, paint) literally fell off like rotten skin.

I usually warp mine in old newspaper to stop it drying out. If the DIAL fails to come up to expectation I may take a look at Synstryp
