I bought one of these the other day out of curiosity to try it was not expensive so I thought I would give it a whirl.

Yes, it`s too bad Lee don`t make the original Autoprime any more. The square type primer tray on the new version is vexing to use.

Long long ago when faeries dwelt in the land and there were gnomes at the bottom of the garden Lee made one of the best hand primers ever made.

I tried the Lee bench primer - returned it.

I use the Forster bench mounted primer tool as much as anything and find it works well as long as you leave it set to one case head size as adjusting the blades to suit a different case is a faff.

What is the main benefit of a bench mounter priming tool compared to a hand held one? Is it purely the reduced leverage required?

I use the RCBS handheld one which takes 100 primers in a tray. It uses normal shell holders and there's different inserts for small or large primers. In fairness, some cases have a "tight" squeeze for certain primer brands when using a hand held device.

My bench space is a premium at the moment, so do not currently have space for such a tool.

The only reason I use the Forster is I misplaced a set of three customised RCBS hand primer tools when we moved here and I am yet to find them. I did buy the Hornady hand held tool however that is also far from ideal.

I will sit down and build myself my 'nearly perfect' hand primer tool one day, it has only been in the design stage for some 5 years so plenty of time yet :)

I use the (now discontinued) Lee Autoprime 2. It's press-mounted, with the priming mechanism within a normal-sized die body, activated by a rod attached to the press ram. Primers are fed from the circular-type tray and the case is held in a standard shell-holder.

If you can find one, I heartily recommend.

I use two bench mounted tools both RCBS, the old primer tube one and the newer one with the primer strips, they only get used when I have a load of brass that needs priming off press, of the two I prefer the one with the strips as these are quicker to load than the tubes. My favourite hand press is the RCBS as it has good leverage over the thumb ones. When it comes to top accuracy loading where every variable needs tight control then the Lee hand unit pictured above comes out.

The vast majority if my priming is done on my presses, I use Redding T7 turrets for most of my loading and the tube fed on press priming system they use has to be the best ever, reliable, not fiddly, good feel with ooomph when you need it.

Don't have any bother with mine. The first interchangeable ram arms were sub standard but they have been uprated and replaced. Alpha, if you haven't emptied your bin yet dig it out and I'll take it off your hands!
