Storing someone else's gun ...

A friend has applied for and will soon get a new SGC although being Thames Valley it may be a while yet! He lives in rented accommodation and is likely to move in the next few months and there is the possibility that he may not have a suitable cabinet location.

So, I am thinking ...

When he buys a gun, there is no reason why it cannot be entered on my certificate too and I can store it on his behalf - both authorities will be informed. He will never have access to my keys or cabinet though. As and when he wishes to shoot he will need to come and ask me for the gun and then return it later.

Should I have a register that is added to every time he takes the gun and when returned?

Can anyone see any pitfalls in this arrangement? Obviously when not in my cabinet he will need to ensure safe keeping.

Two of the questions on his application form go along the lines of "are the security arrangements at your home address?" and "is the security shared with another certificate holder?".

Answer those to their satisfaction and Robert is your fathers brother.

You do not actually need to have a secure storage facility to have an SGC. It allows you to shoot with a borrowed gun without having the landowner/tenant present. However, you do need to persuade the FEO that you understand the need to secure them guns when not in use, if you intend to own any.

In this case, his current accommodation is fine but his next location may not.

I don't know what your/your friends FLD's are like but in order to avoid undue hassle I'd be tempted just enter it onto your SGC as if its your gun without informing anyone but your FLD in the usual manner. You can then lend it to any SGC holder for 72hrs at a time, its up to them to take 'reasonable precautions' to store it while its in their possession.

If its going to be a long term/regular arrangement I'd ask your friend to install a gun clamp. I'd expect he'll be quizzed as to why he has no guns added to his certificate at renewal time if it goes on for that long.

That was an alternative way ... however the 72 hour rule maybe a little short. My FLO is great but don't know what TVPs ones are like. I am trying to think of the optimum way.

Could be put on both certificates as co-owners.

For a number of years I lived/worked in Oxon but had mh FAC issued by Northumbria, with the guns in the safe at my parents house. For the occasion they were needed in Oxon, I stored them in the cage at work.

Ditto when i was in Dudleyshire at Uni. then repeated when i moved to a quaint fishing village a la Tyne Dock by the sea.

One option would be a cabinet purely for your mates guns, to which you have no access/keys.
