I know some of you guys are engineers or MacGyvers fiddlers . I have a small polished Stainless steel object I want to give a matt finish aspect . Beads or Sand blasting is the option ? Are there companies that do that for small jobs ?

Try your local garages, the Mercedes dealer here does wheel refurbishing and gave me access to their beadblasting service a few years ago.

I'd go for beadblasting over sandblasting. Depending on the media used, sandblasting can produce a nice rough surface whereas with bead blasting it will produce enough of a matte finish without being too rough. Air flow pressure and distance from nozzle also has an effect on the surface finish.

Might be worth getting in touch with some gunsmiths to see what they use to prepare barrels prior to cerakoting them.

The one we have at work turns shiny stainless steel into a grey matte finish. I am not sure if its a bead blaster or sand. I will check to morrow. Its a very large machine you can easily get a barrelled action in it.

I have use of a grit blaster cabinet (silicone carbide grit) that gives a finish similar to 600ish wet and dry paper or with the expendable beads gives a matte finish, if all else fails.

Arghhh Froggy-I just did the test on piece of polished s/s,not good-we moved from sand to abrasive compound-probably silica carbide and it is to sharp!finish as a sand paper-so I can not help maybe some chemical reaction do a job-acids?
Also-once a had a titanium watch with case of satin finish-it was polished off to glare in less then year....

It is stainles steel watch case I want to have bead-blasted , so subtle non-reflective "satin finish" is what I wanted to achieve .

I'd be worried about grit getting into the bezel
