First attempt at reloading 223

I am about to reload in 223 for a Remmy 700 SPS varmint with it's 26 inch 1:12 twist. Use will be target out to 5-600 yds..

I have new Lapua brass and CCi primers. I have varget powder which I use for 308 and will prob use this unless consensus steers me elsewhere (alternates?)

Main problem is deciding which bullet to put on the end. Where should I start?

Joe

Look at the 52gr A-max & similar A-max bullets in the 50-55gr weight range.
There's also a couple of > 55gr Sierra Match Kings.

Mate with a 1:12 twist .223 says he can use some bullets of up to 60gr depending on bullet shape.

Speer bullets are also good if you can source them.
Lead bullets with gas checks could be worth trying too. Cheap practice & no supplier issues!

Not had any positive result with PRIVI bullets.

Hornady 2267 55 grain. Or the Amax are my favorites in my .222. I am currently looking for a cast boolit to play with.

Varget is expensive although I followed the same logic of I have the same powder for .308 and used some of mine with my .223. I now just use Varget for my TR rounds for 900+ yards. An alternative I have had good results with is Vhit N140 - albeit with 69gr SMK's as I have a 1/9 twist.

I am using A-max in my 308 and am pleased with the results as I mentioned above so they will be a contender and I shouldn't need to change powder which is good also.
I don't want to push the limit of the twist rate so I might try the 55gr of some description.

Cheers so far, further suggestions welcome, unless I've got the formula cracked already. (not)

I have the same rifle, I use 52-55gr SMK's bullets to the distance of 600yds no problem. I have also used SMK 62gr bullets which seemed ok but only tested out to 300yds.

Varget powder is what I use.

I have used PPU 55gr as a stand in bullet when could not get SMK's have to say not bad out to 300 would not use for any greater distance.

I'm using Reloader 15 powder as it too can be used for .308. Finally testing my handloads this Sunday fingerscrossed My gun has a 1:7 twist so I've got to go to the heavier (and consequently more expensive :bad: ) bullet range (I'm testing 69gr and 77gr Sierra matchkings)

Should have said the 62gr bullets used are part of GGG 5.56/.223 ammo bought. Not SMK's...

52gr Sierra Match King's are a nice round that will work well with your twist rate. I've used Ramshot Tac powder which works quite well. It's a cheaper alternative to H-335 or Varget.
