Any of you tried casting and shooting slugs from zinc (some people call them zlugs) or a zinc/aluminium/copper alloy like Zamac?

Not yet, but happy to loan you a mold if you fancy making a few thousand test slugs

Never tried it. As Wing Nut says, I'll try some after you cast some test slugs with his huge airgun mold....

I'm up for having a go.
A couple of questions:
1) Where do you get the zinc or zinc alloy and what does it cost?
2) Does it melt about the same temperature as lead?
OK 3 questions:
3) Do the 'new' slugs shoot better than lead ones?

I'm just starting out on the casting journey but my understanding is:
1) modern wheel weights (not all)
2) higher temp (850F?)
3) no idea

No.
Brenneke do make some sort of "lead free" slugs, so the concept is probably sound enough. They are Sabot slugs, very light (19g vs. 28-32g "usually" found in 12 bore) and enormously (10x the price of lead slugs) expensive.
I imagine you would need to be rather careful wrt choke constriction and slug size (presumably why Brenneke sabot them)

I've got some French made Sauvestre "slugs"
Look like small bombs/torpedo's....even have plastic fins on them.
I think they're alloy...

All metals are alloys, ooman, unless you go to almost prohibitive extremes of refinement.
