Hi,
Can anyone recommend a 12g shot cartridge for practical shotgun/steel plates? Or are they equally fit for purpose?
Also any reccomendations for slug?
Thanks,
A

Pump or semi? The gun will determine what cartridges you use as some semi-autos are ammo fussy.
With PSG, the steel plates are calibrated to fall with 7.5's from an unchoked gun...
I use Kent Velocity 28g 7.5's with fibre wad. (these have now been rebranded as gamebore velocity). Some people prefer to use bigger shot (No 5's for example) but I've had no problems with 7.5's.
For slug, again it depends on the gun. Buy some different types and try them out and see what works for your gun. I use S&B in my Benelli Supernova which seem to work well.

Oh, and depending on the course of fire and where you are shooting you might need to get some buckshot. This is referred to as 'SG' or 'Special Game' loads here.

It is a case of what works in your gun v's what you can get hold of
Some guns are more fussy over loads and lengths than others. Affraid it is often a case of trial and error.

Some grounds restrict you to felt wads only...it'll be worth checking into this before spending any money
As for slug, the cheapest option is to make your own...use one of the molds, Lyman or Lee and get a basic MEC reloader or even one of the Lee units.
Not a massive outlay, and given slug prices (& poor availability) your money will be redeemed within a short time by the significant savings offered in following this route...plus you are not then tied to one supplier/brand

Thanks Saddler. This is the way to go. I reload all my fullbore ammo, didn't even know you could reload 12g. I'm very new to shotguns. More reloading toys to spend my money on :)

I see you're a member at Worcester Norton. Have a chat with Neil Smith next time you are at the club, he shoots both pump and semis and would have a good idea of what is available in your area.
Also, have you signed up to the F4i forums? (
http://four4islands.org/forum/) worcester norton puts on F4i series matches, and the guys from there go all over the place for others too.

Also if you are recoil sensitive (like my wife) then some cartridges give you a bigger kick than others as we found out on Sunday where I had brought a slab of Eley firsts 7.5 65mm fibre which were giving us a much bigger kick than the lyevale express English sporters 7.5 70mm fibre did the weekend before, so much so the wife stopped shooting due to the pain they were giving her, that was through a couple of club pumps ( mine a supernova and hers was a Hatsan Escort), so wouldn't be so bad through a semi. I only got the eley's as they had no 70mm fibre in 28gram at sportsman and were £39.50 for 250 compared to £50 for the others via my club, guess I'm just going to have to either try and find a cheaper softer recoil cartridge, or drop to a 24gram cqrtridge for her or spend more on a decent cartridge from my club to keep her happy.
Also got to watch cartridge size as 65mm ok on pumps but I think you need 70mm minimum for semis (so I've been told) and then finding what you want at a good price is your next challenge, as said above the biggest shooting shop in my area is sportsman shooting centre at southern counties in Dorset and they didn't have any 70mm 28gram in fibre, closiest was 32gram but they wanted £60 per slab for those.
