Does anyone still make rifles chambered in 7.92 mm anymore, or is it just a calibre that the military used and have now discarded? It seems a useful round: powerful, streamlined and heavy, and with a rimless case too, hence perhaps not really obsolete...

I believe Remington chambered a rifle for this round, never that popular in the states for hunting as the ubiquitous 30-06 covered the same sort of ground but the 98 action was used as the basis for many a hunting rifle over there.

Definitely more poular in Europe as a sporting round norma make expanding ammunition still, in fact I have a few rounds left from the last time I was shooting bambi with the calibre. Husqvarna used to make rifles and Mauser still do for the 8x57. So yes.

I know that SAUER offer their S202 bolt-action rifle chambered in many calibres... 8x57JS being one of them.

I have the catalogue at home (which you can also download from their website) and was considering a S202 Wolverine chambered in 6.5x55 but decided to opt for a S&L M97-DL from ovenpaa instead.

Blaser also offer a 8x57JS for hunting.

The 8x57JRS (rimmed version) seems popular for hunting in Europe as many combination guns are chambered in this cartridge. Perhaps someone else can comment further?

Why ?

Mainly for double rifles and Drilings or combination guns with a break open action, the rim ensured a positive ejection.

Most European rile makers manufacture rifles for the 8x57 cartridge as it is very popular in Europe. Also nearly all break action rifle manufacturers make rifles for the rimmed version (8x57irs).

Any good as medium to long (600 to 1000 yard) target round, ie a .308 competitor?

It will get there but it wouldn't be my first choice for that sort of distance. Its a good hunting round though and often compared as being very similar to the .30-06 with a wide range of bullet weights.
