Have a go - the more that become available, then lower the price will go.

£3K is still an awful lot for a bog standard second hand military straight pull of unknown quality and round count - you're paying for rarity rather than guaranteed quality; I certainly wouldn't pay anything like £3K for one.

I believe the one that belongs to someone I know didn't cost that much. I wonder how many people are out there who are prepared to more than £3K for one?

Try your luck, you don't ask, you don't get.

I borrowed the money temporarily off Barclaycard for mine  .

There's probably only around 10 - 12 L98A1's in private hands in the UK, and funnily enough three have surfaced since I first posted this thread. There could be more, as records are vague on this, but there isn't an unlimited supply.

What are they worth? What the seller is prepared to sell it for, and what the buyer is prepared to pay for it. That's one man's £600, and another man's £6k.

I had been looking for one for getting on for three years, and was prepared to pay near on £5k for it. Was it worth it? Not to you, but it was to me.

I dont care about the round count of mine - I will shoot it, if the barrel is fine then a bonus, if it isn't I will rebarrel it!

I also know of one that allegedly sold for £800 not so long back, but the seller didn't know what the going rate was. Once it is in the public arena that they have changed hands for £5-6k, that sets the price for any that subsequently come on the market.

I think I have helped find buyer and seller for another one, in the unlikely event they get it for peanuts, good luck to them!

I was reminded the other day that the first L42A1's to come over from the states were selling for under £1k in Fulton's. In fact I seem to recall some people saying they would never get that much for them.

A close friend paid £7.2k for one in 2012 and I'm told an exceptional example went for £10k last year!
What is the yanks say? "You never pay too much, you just buy a little too early...........?
