How about a X-Trail...??

I bought one about a year ago just for trips down the range track, and when we need to do a big shopping trip...

I got a 2005, 90K miles, 2.5ltr petrol engine for just over £2K...

This is why I initially considered the Suzuki SJ's. The screens drop and doors lift off with minimal mods. The problem Im finding with SJ's is that the majority have been scrapped or have gone into off roading and have been modded to hell which I dont want. the standard good ones are very expensive in good nick.

I've considered one of these as I rented one for a couple of months about 13 years ago and was really impressed. The problem is my shooting vehical budget would probably only buy a bag of crap

The Freelander is a lot more versatile, easy to come by and not unaffordable. Mine is a 2005, 120,000 miles, most options on it and it was £2,300. Look out for Freelanders with the VCU taken out, which stops it being 4WD, a lot of the cheaper ones have damaged seat bolsters so look out for that if it's a big thing for you.

A good plus for shooting from a Freelander is the rear glass (certainly on the 5 door) drops down fully so you can actually shoot from the boot.

The OP stipulated under £1,000 & TBH I don't think there's a running Freelander out there for that kind of money, or realistically ANY marginally reliable 4x4 with an MOT...

I have 2 CRV's (both 2.0L petrol auto's) one an X Reg, has 104K on the clock and still goes like a rocket!

Apart from normal wear and tear (tyres exhausts brakes etc), 200k+ miles is not unusual for these vehicles if they are looked after.
My local Honda specialist had an auto CRV as a loan car and the last time I used it, it had 228,000 miles on it and it was still going strong!

They are front wheel drive in normal mode, the rear wheels engage automatically when the front wheel grip starts to go turning them into 4 wheel drive.

Not in the Land Rover class for off-road performance but they just keep going and I have never been stuck in mud or snow.
