My club stopped having open days as it generated that many membership applications that we couldn't cope with it and it created more unhappy people than happy people as we had to turn many away.

We always have a waiting list of prospective members and a healthy membership, recruitment in the main seems to come from word of mouth and we have no need to advertise. It has been so for at least the past 10 years. Long may this continue.

Ah, so it is a police thing? Presumably the membership secretary sorts that.

I thought the reference was about potential members only joining if they were invited by a current member.

No, it is Home Office thing not a firearms certification issue which is the police's bailiwick.

It is only relevant to Home Office approved clubs.
