We wouldn't be planning on popping hot loads through a barrel, in fact it would just be off the shelf canned bangs - often military surplus. What kind of barrel life might we expect, given that we'd clean it well after every outing so corrosion ought not be a problem.

If thats the case I can not see the point in building a custom rifle you are just wasting your money.

I had an RPA Quadlock with a well-worn Border barrel on it a few years ago. 5,000ish down the barrel but it shot very well indeed.

I can also recommend the output of ROF Fazackerley circa 1955 if that helps...

Like I said cant see the point. Not sure that the guy isnt just making all of this up any way very slow to reply all of a sudden.

Does it matter? I have learnt something by reading the threads Badger started, thought about other people's comments, not seen anything yet that has changed my mind though, I am sure other people have thought about what has been written as well.

Welcome back I trust you had a good time.
You are right of course no body forces you to read the threads. I was following it with interest up to the point that you stated that you would probably put milsurp ammo through it or off the shelf stuff.

Like I said I can not see the point you may as well stick a scope on the P14 you recently purchased and use that.

But its your build your money none of my buisness.

Looking at the comments here and the kit used by the top flight of F class shooters has me in a quandary. I'm also in the market for a barrel - for the 223, want one which is a little more accurate and is as easy to clean as the broughton on my .308.

Everything suggests a straight fight between Trueflite and Bartlein. The way the stock of barrels is at the moment, it's Trueflite from Osprey or Bartlein from Dolphin. Both are roughly the same distance away from me. I trust both gunsmiths to do the job incredibly well. As far as I can tell, both barrels will shoot roughly the same. I have done business with Stuart before and it was a very good experience indeed, but I've no doubt Mik will deliver as well. Both will charge the same price.

Does anyone have any info or thoughts which might sway me to either side? Right now I am totally in the middle - logic does not have a side on this one as they're appearing to be exactly as good as each other at the moment!

My view is your rifle builder regardless of location is going to suggest the barrel based on a number of factors.

Stock or availability to the rifle builder
Cost to him.
Ease of machining.
Profit to the rifle builder
Perceived accuracy for repeat sales.

Plus of course it only takes a couple of names to do well and people instantly follow suit on choice of action, length and make of barrel and even cartridge regardless of true suitability.
