I traded my 94AE in for a Marlin a few years back, as it wasn't reliable enough for faster courses of fire - At the time I couldn't afford both, and now really regret parting with it...

...as a competition tool, the Marlin is great, but in some way it's a bit soulless...the Winny looked and felt the part, and I should have kept it for slow fire/long distance...

You see I dont understand this Winchester slow action thing.
My Winchester trapper AE in .357 will shoot them as fast as I can work the action and I have never had a problem with it it eats any thing I feed it with out any problems. (All my ammo is hand loaded I have never put a factory round through it.)

The main course of fire I shoot competitively (club leagues/Phoenix) is T&P 1 - the 3rd detail of which, requires 2 shots in a 3 second exposure - this is much easier with a 'tricked and slicked' Marlin (older model) than a Winny - don't take my word for it...ask the national squads....

Though what I acually meant when saying I'd have kept the Winny for slowfire/long range, is that if you start to have action/feeding problems, then there is time to clear the jam, and even continue by single feeding if you had to - Unfortunately with T&P 1, there isn't a malfunction series; so if you jam...you're buggered...

That said, some of the jamming/feeding problems with the Winny may have been down to the user - I found it a PITA to take apart and clean, and broke the ejector once while putting it back together - also my efforts to adjust the carrier (when it was playing up) made things worse....

....so mabey I should re-phrase what I said....as a competition tool the Marlin is more 'fool' proof...so better for me

However the Winny was more accurate at 100 yrds than my Marlin (maybe due to the longer barrel), and in an ideal world, I'd have kept it - It would have been good to leave it with open sights, and work up some distance loads (possibly jacketed)...but it's too late now

If it's just a a reliable lever action rifle you're after then get ann older Marlin. The new ones are pants and being returned in disgust by the skip load so be wary of any 2nd hand immaculate rifles.

If its a piece of history; as close to a real cowboy gun you can get without getting a real relic then it has to be a Chapparal Arms. http://www.chaparralarms.com/
