That motor is almost exactly the same as the ones I use in the Targetmasters - I use the same gearbox but with a smaller motor. Great little gearboxes with well cut metal gears.

I think there will be more than enough power for the main drive and will be quite happy to run on any voltage from about 4.5v upwards - I would be quite happy running the main drive and the cartridge turntable from the one motor.

Brilliant, many thanks for confirming that, I know I tend to over engineer when I build things and given a choice I would have gone slightly larger however I was still quite confident the motor/gearbox would do the job. They are readily available on eBlag and other places from 600rpm down to 6rpm in this size so a good range and available for as little as GBP11.50 each.

How am i supposed to waste away the hours at work thinking up projects when you won't feed me my daily distraction? How's the build going?

The project has stalled slightly as I had to order a 12" vernier off eBlag as I had no way of accurately measuring the table size and as I have three tables of the same diameter I want to get them right. Hopefully it will arrive in the morning and I can make the last couple of cuts and get the platen bolted on for machining. The good news is I had room to bolt a machine vice at the other end of the table and get on with a bipod I am building for Christel plus another project.

Yesterday was screw cutting left and right hand 8mm threads on a shaft, that was interesting as well. Especially when the bloody chuck started to wind itself off first time.

Well that is the table and platen cut to size, next job is to bore the holes for the cases to sit in on the platen. I had no idea just how much difference the quality of end mills makes to finish. I can see I need to invest in some better tooling.

Can anyone recommend a good make of 10mm End mills?

Karnasch (i think that's how to spell it). We use the general cutters, the cobalt carbide and the tialn coated. They seem to stay sharp and last much longer than most of the others that we've tried. Don't bother buying a specific Alu cutter; a general cutter will do.

Don't buy cheap. You'll regret it when they break on you mid-job. We get a good service from Cutwel's (cutwel ltd) in yorkshire.

Update. The platen now machined to size, here I have just finished boring the holes for the cases. It has been built to take SAUM brass and I will make some drop in sleeves for .308/.284 brass. Without sleeves it will also take 8x58RD which was important as forming the brass for the Krag is going to need at least two annealing sessions per case.
Next step is machine the drive itself, right now I have no idea how to clamp it down so that will be interesting.
