Yes - many! it might come as a surprise to know that there are plenty of folk around who will pay to use this unique facility.
I cant see the price dropping - the NRA have no reason to. Hopefully next year with Covid under some sort of control the 5 shooter max will be opened up and the time extended.
I have been to Orion and will probably go again. I live 30 minutes from Bisleycentric so a trip to Orion is quite a trek.
It also involves at least one overnight stay. There were three of us that shared the cost of Orion for sole use all day. My money - my ammo - my choice etc. I cant understand how any one can can justify spending £7/8k on a rifle setup then wince about the cost of range hire. Your ammo cost will be more!

Presumably you all made full use of the recent NRA survey?

I live 30 minutes from Bisleycentric so a trip to Orion is quite a trek.
It also involves at least one overnight stay. There were three of us that shared the cost of Orion for sole use all day. My money - my ammo - my choice etc. I cant understand how any one can can justify spending £7/8k on a rifle setup then wince about the cost of range hire. Your ammo cost will be more!

I did indeed. I suggested my initial idea in this post in the survey response and it is what spurred me to make this thread, to see if people thought it worth putting forward a detailed proposal/suggestion to the NRA.

Your points about travel time, rifle and ammunition costs is my point in starting this thread.

People like me do not have entire weekends, nor groups of people to shoot with. I believe you are correct (I could be wrong) in that someone who spends £7/8k on a rifle setup would most likely be happy to spend £1-500 p/p to rent a range for a day to stretch its legs.

I am suggesting making an affordable option, that is more accessible to individuals or pairs. As an example, my ideal world would be steel gongs placed every 100yds from 100 - 1,000. I would then book an hour or two, turn up with my Lee Enfield, my Martini-Henry and my K31 and have a damn good go at hitting all of them. Am I willing to pay £500, or £250 if I shoot with a friend to potentially miss the target 8/10 with .577/450? I don't think I could justify it. Spending £20, 30, 40, £50+ for an hour or two? Yes.

In summary, Chobham Ridge looks great, but what you've said there is my concern - that it is aimed at people with £7/8k rifles and associated equipment, time and finances. I am looking for something to be open and accessible to everyone, even paupers like me with my £300 Lee Enfield and young children that occupy my time, surely? I hope that is a valid point to make and that the NRA, being a charitable organisation, could understand that.

All valid points that I concur with! I have always maintained that the shooting sports should be accessible to all and, where practical and financially possible, supported 100%. An issue with Bisley is range space. The place is almost deserted tue/wed/thu but can be heaving most pleasant weekends. Must be quite challenging fitting everything in over a normal year. Being retired I made full use of the 25% off deal on a Tuesday in recent years. At this moment in time I suspect the NRA are in a financial wilderness and will be looking at the bottom line with any physical investment. Needless to say I will support your endeavor 100%.

I am making use of the Tuesday discount next week for the first time in 2020 and I'm very much looking forward to getting back out shooting!

There was a theoretical opportunity many years back to have etr fig 11`s installed on a couple of lanes of Stix.

If you fancy ETR on a field firing range join a club that shoots at StanTA or SenTA. There are many different ranges in both complexes that have fig11s out to 400 and even up to 600yds or so, and at 'unknown distances' to make it interesting.

I lied, I paid £16.50 and thought 'that's cheaper than normal' but have just realised I haven't shot since high season, so the price has already dropped, and not by 25%

Update - My letter is complete and a colleague is making some adjustments before it goes over this weekend. I want to get it in before Christmas and will provide any answer I get on this thread.

I run a historic service rifle club and with the exception of maybe an occasional paper shoot we'd all shoot steel exclusively if it was offered. Like the original poster said I think many people who own battle rifles not intended for target shooting would be happy with practical accuracy. The time saved not needing a target marked would be fantastic and steel can create some really interesting courses of fire. Also if you had steel you could potentially have plates at different distances and all the shooters in one place so you could shoot at different distances on the fly.

I think the days of the entire shooting community only wanting to do TR are done (if they ever existed). Bisley should embrace CSR more and steel targets would go a long way towards that.
