My club issues a use sheet. On it we write the details of the firearms we own in numbered boxes and we then record on this sheet each time we use a particular firearm and also record it in the signing in book by number.

So, say I was to use my Mosin on Sunday, I'd record in the signing in book, as well as the use record sheet, the number '4' to show which rifle.

It is the belief of the club that this meets the requirements, however I will contact my secretary to further discuss as I feel we need further clarification to ensure we comply.

Each firearm is allocated a number so at a shoot number 3,6 and 8 may have been used for example.
These numbers tie in with a master sheet containing the actual serial numbers.
This was implemented at my nominated club a few years back after a HO visit.
We are due another HO visit fairly soon so will see if this changes.

It seems really petty, especially when the whole FAC process is centred around trust. If someone wants to know which of my .22 rifles I've shot in the last 3 months, they just need to ask. As you say, it's not as if this new system that is going to inconvenience the clubs and those without multiple rifles of the same calibre, is infallible. I would say it's ill thought out and almost bureaucracy for bureaucracy's sake.

This is what I'd prefer to do. I wouldn't post a picture of a car I want to sell on the internet without obscuring the number plate and I'd like to retain sensitive serial number data if possible. Out of interest, who keeps the master sheets, the club or the members?

In my case, the vast majority are kept in the club folder that goes to every shoot.

One of our members has more shoots away at comps and he uses a similar record sheet that he asks the event organiser to countersign the entry for the event, that way they continue to hold accurate records when it comes time to showing good reason through use.

Thanks. I wouldn't have minded if I could have kept my serial numbers at home and forwarded them on to the FEO or committee if requested. Seems that won't be possible though.

As long as you can produce up-to-date and accurate records, I don't see why it should be a problem keeping it at home. They are kept in the folder for convenience more than anything.

There is no hardship to a copper by cross-referring a single number to your records sheet with the serial numbers on. If anything, it will probably make it easier for them!

I can recall one event in one of my clubs (5 or 6 years ago?) where the police turned up to check the records to see if one member had fired one particular rifle in the last two years.
Sussex constabulary IIRC.

my home club has also just imposed this, and I am against it for the same reasons as Halodin.

I suggested to a commitee member that we assign a letter to each rifle we own, then use that in the log, and if the police want to know what those letters represent, they only have to ask. hell, it could even be down to the order they appear on your FAC! in which case the police can find out for themselves! (this does of course start to break down after variations etc if the police insert a new rifle in the middle)
