Have you tried seating the projectile on one of the Hornady match rounds a little deeper in the case, say 20 thou ? You might have very short freebore.

OK, that indicates the freebore is short, as you would find in many match grade rifles. This is not a bad thing at all, it probably was chambered that way to suit a particular projectile and may therefore not provide you many options in that regard. The twist rate might give you a further clue regarding the specific (weight) projectile it was chambered for.

Can you confirm the measurement of the case neck of a fired round ?

If you still want to load factory ammo from the magazine, consider extending the throat.

The original post was about chamber length buttons but we do seem to have wandered off and are now discussing my Shilen barrelled 6.5x55 and its tight chamber. As Adam says it has been discussed before at lentgh. But if you guys want to continue the debate I'm happy to do so regardless of what Adam posted to the contrary. After all he is only a impartial moderator.

I personally value all your input.

Unfortunately as a moderator I have to stay awake to moderate, your tight chambered Tikka discussions are positively soporific.

Keep on the chamber button topic or if you have something new and enlightening about the Tikka then start a new thread and amaze me.

Adam is correct in as much as I have spent a lot of time researching and debating my tight barrel. I believe I have got it well and truly sussed now.
I would like to know what the markings on the barrel mean but that's about all. I would like to re chamber it in 6.5x47 at some point
but for now I'm pretty comfortable with my 6.5x55.

Any way this evening I'm playing with chamber length buttons. One of the guys is jetting out to Florida shortly he will be back in the new year so I'm going to take the opportunity of ordering some more custom expanders and probably some chamber length buttons from NOE and maybe a mould or two I also have my eye on some other bits from other suppliers in the USA I would like. Depends on the finances.

NOE state that there chamber buttons will probably not work in a tight chamber. I can not argue with that the 6.5x55 button in there dimensions did not. I made one that does all though I'm not convinced that the measurements are right I rushed it. To morrow I finish at lunch time so Iv got more time to spend at the lathe. I'm going to make a couple more in 6.5x55 and try again. To be fair I think I should try a couple of NOE,s jobbies in standard calibres for comparison.So at the same time Ill have a go with a .308 and a .303 I purchased from them earlier in the year. I also did some cartridge overall length measurements using a Hornady tool with drilled and tapped cases in 6.5x55.and .308. I also need to check the 7.62x39 and the mas36.
I used the Hornady comparator in 6.5x55 and one of the shooting sheds for the .308. The shooting sheds is a much better product.

I received a package this morning with some 6.5x47 bits and some cases from a forum member that I am extremely grateful for. Thank you very much. So I put the chamber length buttons on the back burner. I'm convinced now that the way to go is to re chamber my 6.5x55 in 6.5x47.
It has all ready been made clear that the process is off no interest to any one here so I wont bore you with the details.
