for a full custom built rifle with custom barnard action and match grade barrel thats an awesome price, cant think of one that comes close

Yes ooman. It's an awesome price. Hence we chose it as the benchmark. Now, tell us more about this Barnard action of which you speak. Why is it better than an Enfield or P14?

Mik's doing my build at the moment which is based on a L/H Rem 700 action. I looked at "proper" actions but didn't think they'd be worth the £600+ difference in a .45 acp

No idea!

For my 45 Super, I have the Ishapore and it's been done before, so I'm using that.

For my 257 Roberts AI, I had a barrel threaded for a Mauser action, so that whatt I'm using, a K98 action.

The method of switching barrels may determine the action you use. Discussing the action first seems a bit a*se about to me, unless I'm missing something? Why not use a switch barrel rifle as the basis of the build, there are plenty out there?

We assumed choosing the action first was a sensible thing to do as the barrel, trigger and stock all hang off it, and the bolt slides through it. However, we don't know everything, please enlighten us if we are being a silly badger. I'd quite happily use a lower cost action if it can achieve all that is required of it.

Switch barrel rifle? Yes it's an option. We know little about them. Do elucidate...

You're wanting to change barrels, to me, that seems the lynch pin on the whole idea. There's no point getting sold on the idea of a particular action only to find that to switch barrels you need a barrel vise and action wrench!

As to the various switch barrel platforms out there - you have a computer and the internet - consider it your homework!

As Spud mentioned, Barnard is a good example of a heavy and solid and most importantly tested action. It works.
The Savage action with Accutrigger just works.

It is worth having a look at the INCH action (no, I am not mentioning that for what people may think is the reason) The 22mm bolt is massive. The competition results speak for themselves.
Also check out the coming Model 59 Delta, I say that because it is the most impressive action I have ever held in my hand. Massive is an understatement, inside a 22mm 3 lug design and on the outside it is a Rem700 clone and with a CG trigger thrown in for good measure.

If I was to buy a custom rifle I would not buy a ready made one, I would make sure I got the best for my money, read "what I want for my money". Because what I want may not be what the next person wants or thinks is the best. Another thing to consider, build it for you. No one else. Selling a custom rifle is not always easy so you might as well get what you want in the first place:)
