Gaz:
I know a man with a 5.56 AK straight-pull, he's having a whale of a time trying to sort out a handload that shoots without tumbling. I think it originated from Izhmash originally, no idea where he bought it from over here though.
I used to own an AK in 5.56 and had the same problem as the man you know, in the end I found that it didn't like any bullet over 55Grns. Best and most accurate load I ever found for it was 24.6grns of Hogdens Varget over a 55grn V-Max bullet. Also I found it was really hard on brass as well which was one of the reasons I got rid of it, (it was a semi auto) the damn thing used to knock lumps out of the brass leaving huge indents on the cases rendering them unusable for reloading. It was a nice little rifle though.

Gaz,
Do you know the twist rate? My was 1 in 7 and it worked best with 62gn bullets, someone else on here has one like the one I had and it liked the 69gn SMKs! If it's one of the newer ones it should be 1 in 12, so work with 55 gn or lighter.

The bottom line is to find the barrel twist and then experiment with different bullet weights.

I shall pass your comments on when I next see him - cheers. Don't know much about the rifle other than his only non-keyholing load left his cases absolutely smothered in soot. We guessed it was a "low pressure" load that wasn't stretching the cases enough to seal at the neck.
