6,5 gives you a very good choice of high BC projectiles, the only downside would be very windy conditions where a heavier projectile is less susceptible to the impact of wind however I would suggest this was a minor issue. Christel was shooting .224" 80 grain SMK's at 1000 in reasonably windy conditions the other day and only fell out of the V Bull on one occasion so it is doable with lighter bullets.

There appear to be more P14's than 17's around and they are certainly cheap, if you can find a target P14 as a donor it will already have a decent trigger plus a .308 bolt face, you need to check that you can still chamber a 6,5x55 though. I can have a look tonight if you wish.

Added a bedded action and a decent stock and you have the basis of a reasonable shooter that will be quite capable to 600/1000. The P14 is also going to be a lot easier to find than a decent G/KAR98.

I will see if I can get a picture of the one I spotted a couple of weeks ago so you can see what can be done with them.

Thanks, that will be most appreciated ! I'm rather taken by this one... http://homepage.ntlworld.com/paul.tvg/page61.html Something very similar in 6.5x55 mm might be just about perfect for my needs

It looks like will comfortably take the 6,5x55 and the 6,5x284 That is a nice looking P17 :good:

Building such a rifle would be great fun, if you can turn your hand to basic DiY then it would be easy enough to get a target P14 chambered in 7,62x51. Get it rebarrelled and buy a stock and have the fun of inletting and bedding it yourself.

Or get an Israeli K98 which has already be re-barrelled in 7.62.... ;)

FWiW -

What about a Mosin Nagant M91/30 in 7.92x54R ?

They're converted all the time in the States, there's loads of purpose built stocks and trigger sets for them - plus the 7.62x54R cartridge is a good'un.

Also, MNs are everywhere, so it's wouldn't be like you were butchering a Lee-Metford or something :good:

I already have a MN M1891 and love shooting it, though in terms of accuracy I don't think it's quite up there with the Swiss and Swedes - even in its Suomi incarnation. As a reliable, hard hitting battle rifle it's hard to fault but I doubt it could make the transition to 600m tack driver.

I managed to put 5 shots into a 2p sized patch at 100m once of a rest with a PE MN Sniper so it can be done, just not very often. :(

I'd have to sub-contract my shooting to CoH Craig Harrison to manage that...

Salut,
7.5x55 is a good amo and the K31 action is supposed to be top noch and I must admit the one in the middle does look like a very sexy beast ...
