I believe the proof house will not fire a proof round through a gun if upon inspection it's still in proof. They will still mark the gun as newly proof as the inspection suffices.snayperskaya wrote:I know of someone who sent an old rifle for proofing, which came back with new proofmarks, and on taking it to the range they couldn't chamber a round. On closer inspection it was found that the chamber had a broken case inside it that had been there for donkeys years and took a considerable amount of effort to remove so it makes you wonder how the proofhouse managed to chamber a round to test it!.

Re: Re-proofing "old" guns
how long does a gun stay in proofI believe the proof house will not fire a proof round through a gun if upon inspection it's still in proof. They will still mark the gun as newly proof as the inspection suffices
Re: Re-proofing "old" guns
There is no "valid length" of a proof mark. Once there, it's there. Section 122(3) of the Gun Barrel Proof Act 1868 creates the offence of sell or exchanging or attempting to sell or exchange an arm without a proof mark. I've just had a Hoo-Haa with an RFD over this. Likewise, the GTA appear ignorant of legislation and the Proof Houses themselves appear to be nothing more than Dens of Iniquity!!
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Re: Re-proofing "old" guns
If it is out of proof I don't think you can even give it to another shooter. If the barrel is modified in such a way that the proof marks are still valid then there's no problem.ballkeeper wrote:i have a gun with proof marks on ,but has been modifed barrel and so can only be given away? i believe ?

Re: Re-proofing "old" guns
If that is all that has been done then I would argue it has not been weakened in any way so still in proof
