Re: Steyr Scout
I think if I were looking for a scout rifle, Ruger's concept would get the nod over Steyr's.

It's a rifle designed for carrying a lot and shooting little based on his experiences hunting in Africa when you might only take one shot all day. Long eye relief was good situational awareness when out in the bush where there might be dangerous game nearby. The gun certainly wasn't designed to be tack driver target rifle.
Watch the video and decide if it's the right gun for the wild frontier of East Anglia.
The Cooper re-invented Scout Rifle was far more. Cooper defined it as a General Purpose rifle. Not over specialised, but being able to complete several roles well. Cooper wrote reams of information on it and far too much to paraphrase in a post.
One thing on the scope, it is not a long eye relief, but an intermediate eye relief. Long, or pistol eye relief scopes will work in a pinch, but the concept is low powered, low mounted, used both eyes open.
The Steyr Scout is not an easy system to master. Ching sling, scout scope, 7lb all up .308 with a 19" barrel is certainly lively. But once learnt, it does work and work well.
I considered turning my Remington LTR into a Scout, but as chambered in 6.8mm SPC, I decided not to. One day I'll have another but as mentioned above, I'll look at the Ruger.
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?
