The lowers don't need to be proofed (there is no test they currently do on the lower anyway). The proof house just stamps everything and if there is not a mark on the lower it doesn't matter.

I have had several uppers proofed at one time only using an old 'slave' lower and knowing this was a slave part they never stamped the lower.

Here's another question if I may jump in.

If you have a barrel cut down and threaded, does it need to be proofed if you want to sell it and what does that consist of?

Really depends on who you ask. If you ask Jackson's Rifles (http://www.reflexsuppressors.co.uk/ ) their legal opinion is no, but if you ask the proof houses they say yes. AFAIK neither opinion has been tested in court which is probably why the proof houses now put a proof mark on the barrel which would be destroyed if the barrel was screw cut and/or shortened.

I recently had a barrel of a rifle chopped and it went back to the proofhouse as part of the cost. Personally I don't see why it needs to be done considering they really only test the chamber, not particularly the barrel, but at least I know there can't be any questions asked in the unlikely event I sell the gun.

Any idea how they actually tested it?

Testing is as follows, check general condition, confirm head space with Go/NO-GO gauges, stick the rifle in a padded vice in a test room, attach a lanyard to the trigger, pop a test round in, leave the room and yank the lanyard, repeat with an oiled test round, inspect, check head space, stamp/engrave/mark and return.

Good to know thanks, does mean I can sell any of my cut down rifles if I ever want to.

As long as they are in Proof.

One interesting point is the Proof stamp on the underside of the barrel just behind the muzzle is a relatively recent thing :)
